Calathea Peacock Plant is based on a leaf from one of the houseplants I keep here, a plant I love for the drama of its markings and the deep pink glow hidden on the underside. I studied the sweeping curves of the leaf and the bold stripe pattern that runs from the central vein, then rebuilt the whole form in layered stitching. The greens shift between bright lime and near-black, echoing the plant’s natural contrast. The thread holds the same soft rise and fall the real leaf has when you pick it up and turn it in your hand.
Calatheas are known for the way they move with the light, lifting and folding through the day. That sense of quiet animation sits in the stitched version too. The dark surface feels alive with hidden colour, and the subtle hints of pink stitched beneath the green echo the richness that shows when the leaf tilts. It’s a small celebration of a plant that looks ornamental at first glance but reveals more the longer you sit with it.
