Alder Buckthorn Autumn Skeleton
Alder Buckthorn Autumn Skeleton is based on a leaf from one of Ireland’s quieter native trees, a species most people pass without a second glance. I enlarged the form so its structure could really be seen, then followed the branching veins that run like a spine through the centre before rebuilding the whole leaf as an open lacework in thread. The colours move through russet, ember orange, and soft wine red, echoing the autumn shades that catch your eye even when the tree itself goes unnoticed.
By stripping the leaf back to its skeleton, the delicacy of its design becomes clear. The open structure lets the light pass straight through, giving the piece a sense of glow, almost like something held up to the sun. Even though alder buckthorn isn’t a showy tree, this single leaf holds a quiet beauty that deserved to be celebrated. The stitched version lets those finer details stand forward, giving the leaf the moment it rarely gets in the wild.
The piece is framed in a white wood box frame with Artglass, keeping the fine thread work protected and the colours bright.
