Based on a high-resolution photograph of an iris, this piece explores the familiar strangeness of the human eye. Up close, the iris becomes almost abstract, like a sea urchin, a sunburst, a deep-sea organism. I translated those fine lines and textures into thread using free-motion embroidery, layering teals, blues, and golds to echo the complexity of the original. The dense centre anchors the piece, while the outer edges loosen and fray into light and movement.

It’s both intimate and universal. One person’s gaze becomes something larger - an invitation, a boundary, a portal.
