Beautiful Fan Weed I began with a small piece of fan weed I plucked from the rocks along the Shannon Estuary, still drying in the sun and holding the gentle curl it had taken on as the tide fell away. I pressed it at home and followed the natural flare of its fronds, rebuilding the shape in layered berry red thread. The stitched form lifts outward from a single point, echoing the way the real plant seems to open itself even as it dries.
The texture holds tiny shifts in colour and density, giving the piece a soft sense of movement, almost like a breath of tide caught just before it settles. Up close, the thread catches the light in a way that makes the fronds feel almost warm, as if they are still holding a trace of the shoreline.
The piece is framed in a white wood box frame with Artglass, which protects the detail and keeps the colours crisp and true.
